New Windsor Police Sergeant William Ruger was awarded the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Chair Award for 2019 for his leadership as our grant project director of the Police Traffic Services (“PTS”) grant.
New Windsor Police Sergeant William Ruger was awarded the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Chair Award for 2019 for his leadership as our grant project director of the Police Traffic Services (“PTS”) grant. Sgt. Ruger was recognized for his effective use of NYS grant funds in increasing motorist awareness of vehicle & traffic laws and for reducing personal injury motor vehicle crashes in New Windsor by 21% over the past year. He was also recognized for his innovative and productive use of grant funding to conduct nighttime traffic checkpoints to enforce & educate motorists in the area of child passenger safety. During just two of these nighttime traffic checkpoints conducted in 2019, an astonishing 45 child restraint violations were observed by Officers and enforcement action was taken. The GTSC Chair Award is presented annually to an individual and their organization for having made efficient use of public resources and for producing programs that are innovative, superior and highly successful in promoting traffic safety. This year’s award was presented on October 24, 2019 at the NYS Highway Safety Symposium in Albany, New York. Pictured in the photo is Sgt. New Windsor Police Officer Steven Bohr recently attended a two-week police training course to certify him to safely and efficiently operate a police motorcycle. The course was held by the City of Yonkers Police Department in Yonkers, New York. The class consisted of 20 police officers from several different police agencies in Westchester, Dutchess, Suffolk and Orange Counties, as well as one officer from a Connecticut agency. This highly demanding and rigorous course of instruction consisted of both classroom training and extensive riding through closed obstacle courses and on public roadways.
Officer Steven Bohr received the ‘Top Gun’ award for being the best motorcycle rider in the class. Officer Bohr is the first officer to be added to the Town of New Windsor Motor Unit in over 10 years. The Motor Unit was formed in 1995 and currently consists of three police motorcycles.

Today Dispatcher Kristi Fitzpatrick was presented with the New Windsor Police Department Service Achievement Award in recognition of her 30 years of service with the town. Town Supervisor George Meyers also presented a certificate recognizing her continuing services and contributions to public safety.
Dispatcher Fitzpatrick is currently the department’s Dispatch Supervisor and works closely with all of our emergency services, which includes all police, fire, and ambulance services.
We congratulate and thank her for her continued service and dedication to the department and to the town and its residents.

Dispatcher Stephen A Bedetti was recently presented with the New Windsor Police Department ‘Service Achievement Award’ for recently achieving 30 years of service with the town. Dispatcher Bedetti is currently the town's dispatcher supervisor who works closely with all the emergency service agencies in the town. This includes all police, fire and ambulance services. Police Chief Robert Doss stated, “It’s quite the achievement to work at any job for thirty years. The fact that Stephen worked all of those years dispatching and coordinating emergency service personnel throughout the town under stressful circumstances is commendable and I offer my congratulations to him.”
On Thursday, May 5, 2022 Dispatcher Christine Csorba was presented with a ‘Service Achievement Award’ in recognition of her 25-years of service with the Town of New Windsor Police Department. Dispatcher Csorba is a very experienced dispatcher who works closely with all of the emergency service agencies that operate in the Town. This includes all police, fire and ambulance services.
Supervisor Meyers stated, “We are very fortunate to have people like Christine working for the Town. It’s the dedicated and professional employees like her that make this Town as great as it is. Congratulations to her on this achievement.”
Police Chief Robert Doss stated, “This is quite an achievement. It’s important that we recognize our employees for all that they do for the community. Dispatcher Csorba told me that she loves her job just as much today as she did when she first started back in 1997. Her passion for helping people has never gone away over the years. I think that’s a testament to the kind of person that she is. Dispatcher Csorba excels at her job when things are at their worst. She always remains calm under the most stressful of circumstances in both dispatching and when speaking to callers on the phone. I congratulate her on this accomplishment and I personally thank her for her service to the Town.”

Traffic Enforcement Alert: Officers from the NWPD Traffic Safety Unit will be conducting traffic posts this week on Clarkview Road to ensure vehicles are stopping at the three way stop intersection and to watch for anyone speeding. This road has become a residential cut-through for many motorists and we want to remind everyone to obey the traffic laws. If you don’t, you just may meet Officer Bohr on one of our Harley Davidson Police Motorcycles. Drive safe and slow down. It’s for everyone’s safety!

Police Arrest Man in Connection to Thefts from Motor Vehicles
Release Date – August 28, 2020:
The Town of New Windsor Police Department arrested a man today in connection to stealing property out of parked cars in the Town of New Windsor. The incidents all occurred during the overnight hours between the dates of August 11th and August 21st along Riley Road and Moores Hill Road. Additionally, all of the vehicles involved were unlocked and parked on driveways outside of houses when the thefts occurred.
Detective Kevin Moore arrested 46-year-old Michael J. Barilla of New Paltz, NY and charged him with Grand Larceny, 4th degree (E-Felony) and two counts of Petit Larceny (A-Misdemeanor). Mr. Barilla was issued an appearance ticket and released without bail, as per the bail reform law, to appear in the Town of New Windsor Criminal Court on September 10, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. before Town Justice Noreen Calderin.
This type of crime is easily preventable and the Police Department needs the public’s help in stopping it from occurring. The public is reminded to lock all car doors when parking a car and to also remove all valuables from the interior of the vehicle. This will eliminate the possibility of becoming a victim of this type of crime.

The New Windsor Police Department will not be releasing the booking photograph in this case due to it now being prohibited under New York Public Officers Law, Section 89, which was amended in mid-2019 to prohibit the release of booking photographs due to it being an “unwarranted invasion of personal privacy”.
A criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
